SPACE CHIMPS

Cinematographer

In this sequence, I initially worked with executive producer Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black, Get Shorty) to outline the visual structure and basic design of the scenes. The interior shots were first storyboarded to capture the emotion and comedy. For the exteriors, we explored the virtual 3D set for dynamic camera angles and then shot targetted coverage of the rocket taking off and flying into space. Editor Debbie Berman shaped the scene and we worked together with director Kirk DeMicco and Barry Sonnenfeld to refine the cinematography and pace. Once approved, the camera team refined the shots in preparation for animation. We added camera polish and refined depth of field after performance was complete. This was our process for most of the movie. Lighting director Erik Mattson and I also collaborated closely on the lighting design so that the camera, choreography, edit, and lighting would all work together to support the story.
